Live Review Hanging onto Every Heartbeat with Cut

photos by Dave Lichterman

April is my birthday month. The week of my birthday kicked off two of my fave bands Foals (my #1 album of 2010) and Cut Copy (my current #1 of 2011). One of my Top 3 shows of my short life (enter laughter here) was Foals. I saw them in-studio then play an explosive Nike Air Max 2011 Womens, mind-blowing set at Showbox at the Market then rushed back to KEXP at midnight cheap beats by dre solo, in time to do my overnight radio show.

The next day at noon was Cut Copy’s in-studio. I’d never seen them for their In Ghost Colours tour and have been playing their sophomore release, Zonoscope, out on Modular Records since its release. Pretty much the only CD I’ve listened to do for a couple months and still going strong.

NYC duo Holy Ghost! warmed up the crowd at Showbox SODO with a nice, strong set of electropop. The band is comprised of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel who are on DFA label. They’ve also toured with label mates LCD Soundsystem.

Cut Copy, hailing from Melbourne Coach Wallets, Australia, started off as Dan Whitford’s project, became a 4-piece band last year and now the tour includes 5 members total. Finally the moment arrived when Cut Copy took the stage, ready to bring high quality synthpop to the massive, sold-out crowd. Really I thought nothing could come close to the Foals show the night before but they didn’t disappoint.

Whitford kept asking the crowd if they were ready to dance. I wondered “Isn’t that what we’ve been doing since the first song?” THE best dance show ever. The crowd (and myself) were literally bouncing up and down non-stop with hands in the air as their epic sounds built up until they blasted through SODO’s high-beamed ceilings. I danced as if no one was watching. Cross it off my list. I will see this band if they’re still touring when I’m really old and every time before that. ;)
